Knowing Better Doesn’t Always Mean Doing Better
Knowing exercise and self care matter doesn’t make them easy. This is an honest look at exhaustion, self criticism, and learning to offer myself the grace I give everyone else.
Murder Mozzarella
A mozzarella stick blocked my airway while I was driving home. My training helped me survive the emergency, but the fear, questions about mortality, and murder mozzarella came afterward.
The House Is Quiet, but My Mind Isn’t
At work, I can manage organized chaos. At home, noise, competing conversations, and racing thoughts can overwhelm me. This is what overstimulation during perimenopause has felt like in my life.
The Small Ways I’m Showing Up for Myself Lately
Showing up for yourself doesn’t always look like a big change. Sometimes it’s the quiet, daily choices that slowly build trust and bring you back to yourself.
When I Do Not Know What to Say
One year after starting Midlife in Mabank, I am grateful, proud, and also honest enough to admit I have felt a little out of sorts lately. This post is a gentle reflection on being tired, unfocused, not quite okay, and still showing up with grace.
Mental Health Awareness Month Is Ending, But the Conversation Still Matters
Mental Health Awareness Month may be ending, but the need for honest conversations does not. In this personal reflection, I share why anxiety, depression, childhood trauma, grief, frontline healthcare trauma, and midlife mental health deserve compassion, not shame.
What the Earth Gives Me Back
I don’t connect to the earth in big ways. I connect to it in my backyard, in quiet moments that remind me to slow down and breathe.
What Public Health Didn’t Prepare Me For
I entered public health believing in systems. What I wasn’t prepared for was how often the system fails the very people who are doing everything right. This is what life, not textbooks, taught me.
Rest Is Not the Same as Time Off
I work six twelve hour shifts, then I am off for eight days. On paper, that sounds like rest. In real life, those days hold everything else. Caregiving does not end when work stops, and rest does not arrive just because the calendar says you are off.
What It Means to Stay Human During Chaos
The world feels louder and heavier than it used to. In the midst of unrest and uncertainty, choosing peace is not passive. It is a deliberate act of humanity in a time that feels increasingly unsteady.
When the Appointment Undid Me
I thought I was doing the right thing. I made the appointment, showed up, and tried to take care of myself after months of caring for everyone else. I did not expect the news to feel like an ending. Sometimes it is not the event itself that breaks us open, but everything we have been carrying quietly behind it.
Winterizing Your Body A Midlife Reminder
After four days iced in by a winter storm, I realized winterizing our bodies means more than staying warm. It means caring for dry skin, stiff joints, and tired systems with the same intention we give our homes when the cold hits.
Letting It Be Easier: Releasing the Hustle Narrative
This week, after working sick for five straight days, I realized just how deeply I’ve tied my worth to pushing through. Midlife is teaching me that ease isn’t laziness, it’s alignment. This December, I’m choosing softness over survival mode.
The Gentle Power of Gratitude
There was a time when I thought gratitude had to be grand. But midlife has taught me something different, that real gratitude lives in the quiet moments, the everyday details, the things we often overlook. It’s become one of the most healing parts of my wellness routine.
Vitality Looks Different Now: What Health Means in Midlife
Once, “healthy” meant chasing thinness and pushing through exhaustion. Now, in midlife, health means honoring my energy, listening to my body, and caring for the woman I’ve become. Vitality has layers — and it looks different than it used to.
In Her Honor: What Breast Cancer Awareness Really Means to Me
After a “suspicious” mammogram last year, I spent weeks in the agonizing limbo of not knowing. I was lucky — it was benign — but the experience changed how I see Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This is my story, my reminder, and my call to action for every woman I love (including you).
What Self-Care Looks Like in Midlife
Self-care in midlife isn’t about spa days or perfect morning routines. It’s about showing up for yourself in real, unfiltered ways—saying no without guilt, moving your body with kindness, and letting go of the pressure to “do it all.”
“There’s No Such Thing As Menopause?” Bless Your Heart.
Some folks are out here claiming menopause isn’t real—that it’s made up, exaggerated, or caused by seed oils and society. Bless their hearts. Because my hot flashes aren’t a conspiracy. The brain fog didn’t come with a hashtag. And my sister’s male OB-GYN told her perimenopause “wasn’t a thing.”
This post is for every woman who’s been dismissed, gaslit, or told her experience isn’t valid. Menopause is real. What’s new is the way we’re finally speaking up about it—and we’re not shutting up anytime soon.
Menopause, Mood Swings & Why I Cried Over a Chicken
Menopause isn’t a breakdown — it’s a recalibration. Here’s what crying over a rotisserie chicken taught me about hormones, midlife, and letting go.
Welcome to Midlife in Mabank!
The Road to Midlife
Not long ago, I was out driving, just me, the road, and the wide-open East Texas sky, when it hit me: midlife isn’t a pause or a detour. It’s the road itself. And around every curve, the view gets a little richer.
Who I Am
I’m Brandy. I’m 50. I’m a respiratory therapist, wife, mom, and Nana; all rolled into one real woman figuring it out as I go. I live in a small town with a big heart and even bigger stories to tell.
Why This Space Exists
This space was born from those stories: the messy, beautiful, surprising ones that show up when the kids are grown, the mirror tells the truth, and the world starts asking, “Now what?”
