The Women September Brings Back to Me
September holds two birthdays that still belong to women who are no longer here. Through Sunday afternoons with Grandma, Lorna Doone cookies with Mom, and grief that arrives on ordinary days, I remember the different ways each woman shaped me.
My Circle Looks Different Now
Midlife has a way of quietly changing your circle. What remains is smaller, but more honest. This is what I’ve learned about connection, loss, and the people who truly count now.
Remembering My Best Friend
He thought he had time. We all do. Losing my BFF Ed to colon cancer taught me how quietly life can change, and how important it is to listen when something feels off. I’m sharing this on his birthday, for him, and for anyone who thinks they still have time.
Mothers and Daughters
A personal reflection on mothers and daughters, grief, boundaries, and how stepping back helped restore connection in midlife.
She’s Still Here: What Fall Teaches Me About Love That Stays
Fall isn’t just about cooler air and changing leaves. For me, it’s a season of memories — of family, traditions, and a love that lingers long after the people who started it are gone. This is how I carry my mom’s magic forward into every autumn.
Sisters After the Storm: Rediscovering Family After Losing Our Parents
When your parents are gone, your sibling becomes the only one left who remembers the whole story. After losing my mom, I found something I never expected — a new, deeper connection with my sister. In the rubble of grief, we began to rebuild not just our relationship, but our family.
The Women Who Aren’t Here: Grief in the Middle of Becoming
Midlife is a season of becoming — but for me, it’s also a season of missing. As I navigate change and rediscovery, I grieve the two women who shaped me most: my mama and my grandmother. This is what it’s like to grow into the matriarch without the women who once guided me.
Making Peace with My Past: Healing Isn’t Linear
Healing isn’t a tidy ending or a perfectly wrapped story. It’s messy, slow, and deeply personal. In midlife, I’ve learned that healing means honoring my past, reclaiming my truth, and letting go of the shame I no longer need to carry.
Welcome to Midlife in Mabank!
The Road to Midlife
Not long ago, I was out driving, just me, the road, and the wide-open East Texas sky, when it hit me: midlife isn’t a pause or a detour. It’s the road itself. And around every curve, the view gets a little richer.
Who I Am
I’m Brandy. I’m 50. I’m a respiratory therapist, wife, mom, and Nana; all rolled into one real woman figuring it out as I go. I live in a small town with a big heart and even bigger stories to tell.
Why This Space Exists
This space was born from those stories: the messy, beautiful, surprising ones that show up when the kids are grown, the mirror tells the truth, and the world starts asking, “Now what?”
